What is a Histamine Reaction?
- waxing or sugaring removes the hair from the follicle.
- your body perceives this as an assault and injury
- histamine rushes to the follicle
- histamine thins the wall of the vessels allowing white blood cells to enter.
- white blood cells are what pus is made of
- some people will welt and some people will actually develop pustules. This does not mean an infection is present!
- clients should know how to prevent and care for this. They should also always be going home with prescribed home care in order to treat and prevent issues that may arise.
- after each appointment to keep their skin clean for the first 24 hours, no sweating, exercised, Swimming or sex, etc!
If pustules pop up after 48 hours this is typically bacterial and happens when you aren't following protocol or doing prescribed home care that works.
Basophils are white blood cells that release histamine (a substance involved in allergic reactions) and that produce substances to attract other white blood cells (neutrophils and eosinophils) to a trouble spot.

To ensure maximum comfort and benefit after the treatment, it is suggested to follow the steps below at home:
- Avoid applying heat to the waxed area for 12 to 24 hours. This includes hot baths, sauna, and steam as well as working out.
- Before your wax, you can take a low dose of an over the counter pain medicine. In addition, if you are prone to any bumps or reactions following the wax you can take an Anti-Histamine to help prevent the Histamine reaction caused by waxing large areas.
- Use Berodins Body Polish Kit for back and chest following the treatment and once a day until breakouts are gone. Use only an anti-acne product recommended by your skin care professional.
- Avoid sun tanning for 24 hours. This includes any strong ultraviolet (UV) light exposure or tanning bed treatments.
- Avoid applying highly fragranced products to the waxed area. This includes, perfume, scented body lotions, antiperspirants, cosmetics, or feminine hygiene sprays. Only use professional products, recommended to you by the skincare therapist who performed the waxing service
- If getting a Brazilian wax, NO UNDERWEAR AT NIGHT (4 nights) also RIGHT AFTER WAX for 12 hours. Be prepared to go home with no underwear on. NO SEX 12 hours after a Brazilian wax.
- Avoid using harsh abrasive or exfoliates in the waxed area. However, if you are prone to in-grown hairs, the day after your waxing treatment, exfoliate the newly waxed area with a clean washcloth to avoid future problems.
- Avoid applying high SPF sunblocks to the waxed area for 12-24 hours after the waxing service. Sunscreen chemicals can be irritating to the newly waxed skin. This includes self-tanning products and tan accelerators.
- Any pinking of the skin should disappear within 6 to 8 hours after the waxing treatment. Slight pinking is normal and indicates that the hair was removed from the root, rather than superficially broken off, as in shaving. This is the reason that professional waxing lasts so much longer.
- For best results, repeat your professional waxing every 4 to 6 weeks depending on the area and your individual hair growth rate.
